Katherine McGarry

Biography

McGarry is currently the Director of European Studies at UCC. European Studies is a distinctive multidisciplinary academic programme (established in 1988), anchored by School of History. Educated in Ireland, France and Italy, McGarry has lectured in the European Studies and Politics programmes at UCC since 2004.

Research Interests

Research interests include comparative European politics, Mediterranean politics, party systems and the processes of Europeanisation and European integration since 1945.

Her primary research focus is on Euroscepticism and on the politicisation of European integration issues (especially in France, Spain, Denmark and Ireland). This relates to the doctoral research she conducted at the Department of Political & Social Sciences, European University Institute, Florence, Italy (under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Bartolini) [defence pending].

Outreach Activities

June 2018: Invited by the Senate to attend a meeting of the NUI to confer an Honorary Degree on Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission (Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin).

June 2018: CACSSS Summer School – delivered a ‘taster’ lecture regarding ‘Key EU Institutions’. The Summer School is aimed at transition and fifth year students and is an opportunity to engage prospective students in the subject area.

May 2018: ‘Decade of Centenaries’ All-island History Competition for Primary and Post-Primary Schools’. Participated in Prize-giving Ceremony at Aula Maxima, UCC. February 2016: European Studies UCC became an official sponsor and partner of Model European Union Strasbourg 2016. MEU 2016 was the 10th edition of the conference and took place in April 2016 in the European Parliament buildings in Strasbourg. One of my students from second year European Studies (Michaela Reilly) acted as Liaison Officer for Ireland and served on the MEU Strasbourg 2016 Organising Team. http://www.meu-strasbourg.org/

November 2015: Organised and Hosted Guest ES Lecture by Dr Ivan Sotkovsky, Faculty of Economics, Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic (18th November). Dr Sotkovsky delivered a lecture regarding demography and the challenges associated with ageing populations in the European Union.

October 2015: Represented the School of History at Autumn Conferring ceremonies.

September 2015: Speaker at Applied History Symposium - 'Skills and Professional Opportunities for History Graduates', University College Cork.

June 2015: Participated in a training workshop in the use of the Visual Identity at UCC. The workshop was offered by Audio Visual Media Services, in association with Marketing and Communications.

June 2015: Participated in the Internationalisation Conference organised by UCC’s International Office (IO) regarding Internationalisation achievements and future plans. The conference featured IO representatives from offices in New York, Delhi, Shanghai and Beijing, as well as academics and IO personnel.

May 2015: Invited to attend and officially represent European Studies at the Iveagh House Commemorative Lecture with United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, on Monday 25 May in Saint Patrick’s Hall, Dublin Castle. This important address was organised jointly by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Institute of International and European Affairs. The UN Secretary General’s speech was preceded by a welcome speech by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Charles Flanagan, T.D. The address was followed by a reception in the Portrait Gallery of Dublin Castle.

July 2015: Attended a two-panel workshop - The EU and the southern Mediterranean - co-hosted by the ISS21 Migration and Integration Cluster and Department of French, UCC.

November 2014: Contribution to organisation, advertising and presentation of EUI PhD programmes at UCC by Prof Brigid Laffan Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and Director of the Global Governance Programme at the EUI. McGarry was also one of three alumni to give a testimonial about her experience at the EUI to the public (3-5pm).

January 2015: Organised and Hosted Guest ES Lecture by Prof. Christophe Gillissen, University of Caen, France (14th January). Prof. Gillissen delivered a lecture regarding Ireland’s approach to EC/EU Membership.

November 2014: Represented ES at ‘EU Jobs’ (DFA – EU Division) Graduate Fair at UCC. Key Speaker (in co-op with www.eujobs.ie): European Studies graduate, C. Kett, currently Third Secretary DFA - Global Horizons Youth Initiative. Arranged for C. Kett to speak to current ES students after her talk (on opportunities / internships in international and EU organisations) and invited her to return for a similar talk in the second semester

Visit by his Excellency Mr. Niels Christen Pultz, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, the Royal Danish Embassy and his wife Mrs. Bodil Bonde Pultz.

Ambassador Pultz delivered a lecture regarding Denmark’s 40th anniversary as a member of the European Union.

Organised and Hosted Polish Ambassador’s Visit to UCC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 (12 – 5pm)

His Excellency Mr. Marcin Nawrot, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of the Republic of Poland kindly accepted an invitation from the European Studies programme to visit UCC. This was the Ambassador’s first visit to UCC. Ambassador Nawrot delivered a lecture regarding Poland’s six-month Presidency of the EU from June to December 2011.

Dr Guay's own department hosts a 'Centre of Excellence for European Studies' (funded by the European Commission) and a 'German Centre for European Studies' (funded by the German government).

Organised and Hosted Belgian Ambassador’s Visit to UCC, Monday, 7 February 2011 (1pm – 6pm)

His Excellency Mr. Robert Devriese, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of Belgium kindly accepted an invitation from the European Studies programme to visit UCC. This was the Ambassador’s second visit to UCC. Ambassador Devriese was accompanied by the Belgian Honorary Consul in Cork, Mr. Dominic Daly. The Ambassador delivered a lecture regarding ‘The rotating presidency under the Lisbon Treaty’. Belgium’s six-month Presidency of the EU took place from July to December 2010.

May 2010: Invited by Alliance Française de Cork to participate in its 4th European Symposium in partnership with the School of History. The Symposium celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration and focused on European youth. It was related to a wider event in France, involving 400 students from across the EU. Morning sessions included feedback between specialists/ organisers and students). In the afternoon, McGarry participated in the debate of one of the 4 roundtables - "After the Lisbon Treaty: the future of political Europe".
